A instalação “Vagalumens” convida o público a mergulhar em um ecossistema noturno reimaginado, onde a tecnologia e a natureza se entrelaçam em uma sinfonia audiovisual imersiva. Pendurados entre os galhos de árvores, seres artificiais autônomos, nascidos da fusão de circuitos simples e esculturas de fios, emitem flashes luminosos e sons delicados, evocando a magia efêmera dos vaga-lumes.

Cada uma dessas criaturas cibernéticas é uma entidade singular, pulsando com uma vida artificial própria. Sua luminosidade intermitente, que mimetiza o piscar hipnotizante dos insetos luminescentes, não é meramente um efeito visual, mas uma linguagem, um sinal no silêncio da noite. Os sons que emanam, sutis e orgânicos, compõem uma tessitura sonora que se harmoniza com o ambiente natural, convidando à contemplação e à escuta atenta.

Em um momento onde estes insetos correm risco de extinção devido ao excesso de luzes artificiais, poluição, uso de pesticidas e perda de habitat, “Vagalumens” propõe uma reflexão poética sobre a simbiose entre o natural e o artificial, questionando os limites de nossa compreensão de vida e autonomia. Ao invadir o espaço arbóreo com sua presença eletrônica, a obra cria um diálogo inesperado, onde a tecnologia não subjuga a natureza, mas a celebra e expande, revelando novas possibilidades de coexistência. A experiência de caminhar sob essa constelação artificial de luz e som é um convite para desacelerar, observar e se reconectar com a percepção do tempo e do espaço, imersos em um espetáculo onde a distinção entre o que é vivo e o que foi criado se dissolve na penumbra.

The “Firefly” installation invites the public to immerse themselves in a reimagined nocturnal ecosystem, where technology and nature intertwine in an immersive audiovisual symphony. Hanging between tree branches, autonomous artificial beings, created from the fusion of simple circuits and wire sculptures, emit flashes of light and delicate sounds, evoking the ephemeral magic of fireflies.

Each of these cybernetic creatures is a singular entity, pulsating with its own artificial life. Their intermittent luminosity, which mimics the mesmerizing blinking of luminescent insects, is not merely a visual effect, but a language, a signal in the silence of the night. The sounds they emit, subtle and organic, create a sonic texture that harmonizes with the natural environment, inviting contemplation and attentive listening.

At a time when these insects are at risk of extinction due to excessive artificial lighting, pollution, pesticide use, and habitat loss, “Vaga-lume” proposes a poetic reflection on the symbiosis between the natural and the artificial, questioning the limits of our understanding of life and autonomy. By invading the arboreal space with its electronic presence, the work creates an unexpected dialogue, where technology does not subjugate nature, but celebrates and expands it, revealing new possibilities for coexistence. The experience of walking beneath this artificial constellation of light and sound is an invitation to slow down, observe, and reconnect with the perception of time and space, immersed in a spectacle where the distinction between what is alive and what was created dissolves in the shadows.

Transfinito é uma instalação com sons e luzes sincronizados, gerados a partir de uma programação generativa. A programação randômica escolhe a sequência dos instrumentos que tocam juntos e seus parâmetros como frequência, duração, posição, etc.
A estrutura tem o tamanho de aproximadamente 2,6m de altura e 3 de largura, mas pode ser executada em formato menor se necessário. É composta por 15 espelhos fixados em uma estrutura de box truss. O laser gera formas que se refletem infinitamente dentro da estrutura e está sincronizado com o som que é gerado pelos instrumentos.

A portal that extends beyond infinity. Rays of light reverberate, creating paths and trails, pointing both to the past and the future. Using light as its brush, at its unfathomable speed, it seeks paths to expand, seeking every possible point. Eventually escaping the labyrinth, it sets out in search of new detours, new nodes for its networks. Whoever passes through this multiplicity of holes modifies the rigid path of the ray, recreating its infinite potential. They are also modified by these holes opened by the lines of movement. The colors draw a volatile map, with more than precise points. How long does it take to see the other side?

Transfinito is an installation with synchronized sounds and lights, generated from generative programming. The random programming chooses the sequence of instruments that play together and their parameters such as frequency, duration, position, etc.
The structure is approximately 2.6 meters high and 3 meters wide, but can be built smaller if necessary. It consists of 15 mirrors fixed to a box truss structure. The laser generates shapes that reflect infinitely within the structure and is synchronized with the sound generated by the instruments.

‘Afluentes’ é uma instalação interativa onde a soma das individualidades de cada participante leva ao resultado amplificado das potências de cada um. A intenção é mostrar como cada pessoa tem o poder de influenciar o percurso dos processos coletivos, alterando seu fluxo e indicando novos caminhos. Cada interação individual é sobreposta às dos outros participantes criando uma síntese colaborativa que resulta na geração de sons e imagens em tempo real.

Em termos práticos, a instalação é composta por três sensores de batimento cardíaco, um alto-falante, um recipiente com água, uma câmera e um projetor. Por meio dos três sensores a ele acoplados, um microcontrolador arduino recebe a informação e a transforma em som, onde a frequência de cada sensor gera um som diferente, que é sintetizado em tempo real pelo microcontrolador. Este som é amplificado por um alto-falante posicionado com a “boca” para cima, com um recipiente com água em cima dele.

Por meio de um fenômeno chamado cimática (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cymatics), as ondas sonoras que saem do alto-falante são traduzidas em padrões de movimento na água, criando uma visualização do som. Quando um segundo interator começa a participar com o seu batimento, os padrões gerados passam a ser a soma das duas frequências, alterando a imagem que se forma no recipiente com água. O mesmo acontece quando entra o terceiro participante.

A intenção da obra é apontar como a participação de cada um é vital para a concretização do todo, que neste caso é materializado em som e imagem. Cada mínima variação no batimento de um dos participantes leva à criação de novos padrões sonoros e visuais, modificando radicalmente o resultado final.

Venho trabalhando com instalações e performances audiovisuais há mais de 15 anos, buscando criar relações entre som e imagem que de alguma forma dialoguem com comportamentos humanos. Formas, sons, movimentos, frequências – cada parâmetro audiovisual que utilizo em meu trabalho mantém uma relação poética com ações, sentimentos e processos do nosso cotidiano como seres humanos.

Neste momento atual onde a sociedade está cada vez mais dividida e separada em lados opostos e dissonantes, gostaria de propor um trabalho onde a cooperação entre diferentes tem por objetivo um resultado coletivo; onde cada participante tenha o seu valor reconhecido, independente de qualquer característica física ou psicológica. Uma combinação entre indivíduos onde todos tem a mesma importância; onde o ritmo do batimento de cada coração cria um fluxo de sons e imagens que deságuam em novos padrões visuais e sonoros, criando uma obra essencialmente participativa.

Esta obra é também a continuação de um trabalho que produzi em 2015 utilizando a técnica da cimática, porém aqui utilizada de maneira completamente distinta.

A instalação também faz parte do meu processo de pesquisa dentro da Visual Music, uma maneira de tratar imagens valorizando suas características em comum com a música.

‘Afluentes’ is an interactive installation where the sum of each participant’s individualities leads to the amplified result of each one’s powers. The intention is to show how each person has the power to influence the course of collective processes, changing their flow and indicating new paths. Each individual interaction is superimposed on those of the other participants, creating a collaborative synthesis that results in the generation of sounds and images in real time.

In practical terms, the installation consists of three heart rate sensors, a speaker, a container with water, a camera and a projector. Through the three sensors attached to it, an Arduino microcontroller receives the information and transforms it into sound, where the frequency of each sensor generates a different sound, which is synthesized in real time by the microcontroller. This sound is amplified by a speaker positioned with the “mouth” upwards, with a container of water on top of it.

Through a phenomenon called cymatics (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cymatics), the sound waves coming from the speaker are translated into patterns of movement in the water, creating a visualization of the sound. When a second interactor begins to participate with its beat, the patterns generated become the sum of the two frequencies, altering the image that is formed in the container with water. The same happens when the third participant enters.

The intention of the work is to point out how each person’s participation is vital for the realization of the whole, which in this case is materialized in sound and image. Every slight variation in the beat of one of the participants leads to the creation of new sound and visual patterns, radically modifying the final result.

I have been working with audiovisual installations and performances for over 15 years, seeking to create relationships between sound and image that somehow dialogue with human behaviors. Shapes, sounds, movements, frequencies – each audiovisual parameter that I use in my work maintains a poetic relationship with actions, feelings and processes of our daily lives as human beings.

In this current moment where society is increasingly divided and separated into opposing and dissonant sides, I would like to propose a work where cooperation between different people aims at a collective result; where each participant has their value recognized, regardless of any physical or psychological characteristic. A combination between individuals where everyone has the same importance; where the rhythm of each heartbeat creates a flow of sounds and images that flow into new visual and sound patterns, creating an essentially participatory work.

This work is also the continuation of a work I produced in 2015 using the cymatics technique, but used here in a completely different way.

The installation is also part of my research process within Visual Music, a way of treating images by valuing their characteristics in common with music.

“Somewhere” is a visual installation that seeks to bring a bit of color into people’s lives, in this time of dystopias, crises, and pandemics. A double rainbow is formed in the arches of the Santa Tereza viaduct, illuminating those who pass by. It is a fleeting moment that seeks to cheer people up and bring hope. The title refers to the beginning of the song “Over the rainbow” and talks about a utopian place, beyond the rainbow, where dreams come true and people are happy.

“Somewhere” é uma instalação visual que busca trazer um pouco de cor para a vida das pessoas, nesta época tão cinza de distopias, crises e pandemia. Um arco-íris duplo se forma nos arcos do viaduto Santa Tereza, iluminando quem passa por lá. É um momento fugaz que busca animar as pessoas e trazer esperança. O título se refere ao início da música “Over the rainbow” e fala sobre um lugar utópico, além do arco-íris, onde sonhos se tornam realidade e as pessoas são felizes.

A instalação “Campos Elíseos” trata da relação entre o ser humano e a natureza. Seu título faz referência ao lugar descrito na Mitologia Grega como o Paraíso, onde todos os que lá estão convivem harmonicamente. Neste caso, uma utopia onde todos os seres têm igual poder e voz, independentemente de sua origem, forma ou espécie. A obra trata do comportamento humano em relação à natureza como algo predatório, destruindo suas fontes e impondo a dinâmica conquistatória que lhe é particular. Aqui, os belos campos idealizados pelos gregos se transformam em uma terra árida, onde os únicos seres que conseguiram sobreviver à ação humana foram os artificiais, autônomos, que dependem apenas de luz como fonte de energia. É um alerta sobre o modo como estamos tratando o planeta e sobre o que acontecerá nos próximos anos caso não mudemos nossa postura.

Os seres propostos aqui estão em algum lugar entre os limites da natureza, em um hiato situado entre os reinos animal e vegetal. O título da instalação faz referência a um dos raros animais que fazem esta ponte; um híbrido entre fauna e flora – o Elysia Chrolotica – que tem características tanto animais quanto vegetais. Ele é um ser que consegue fazer fotossíntese e assim se alimentar de luz, ao mesmo tempo que mantém atributos animais, como a emissão de sons.

O projeto teve início a partir dos conceitos de autonomia e vida artificial. Seres autônomos são aqueles que conseguem controlar suas entradas e saídas em trocas dinâmicas e estáveis. Este conceito está dentro de estudos na área da Cibernética feitos a partir da metade do século XX, por autores como Norbert Wiener e Gilbert Simondon. Ao contrário dos autômatos, que são fechados a trocas e segundo estes autores tendem a desaparecer, os seres autônomos dialogam com o exterior e com ele realiza trocas constantes, de modo a se adaptar ao ambiente em que está inserido.

Baseado nestes conceitos e em um tema cada vez mais presente em nossa sociedade – a vida artificial – pensei em criar uma instalação composta de seres autônomos que utilizassem um tipo de energia limpa, e se comunicassem entre si por meio de um dialeto próprio, composto por sons característicos de cada espécie. A energia que alimenta estes seres é a luz. Porém, em vez de utilizar paineis solares, resolvi buscar outras maneiras de captar a energia luminosa (do sol ou de fontes artificiais) que me permitissem criar seres interessantes esteticamente, e não tivessem apenas um caráter funcional de acúmulo de energia para alimentar um circuito. A pesquisa iniciou-se com pesquisas na internet sobre energia solar e formas alternativas para sua captação.

Os sons dos seres foram pensados de modo a ter uma relação com sua aparência, seguindo conceitos de artistas modernistas como Kandinsky e Klee, que vinculavam cada forma a um tipo de som específico. Objetos pontudos por exemplo teriam uma sonoridade mais áspera e ruidosa, enquanto os mais arredondados emitiriam sons mais suaves. As formas dos seres também têm a ver
com o tipo de onda que emitem: senoidal, triangular, dente de serra, etc. O canto destes seres é esporádico e acontece em tempos aleatórios, de acordo com a programação feita para cada indivíduo. Estes têm um poder de decisão sobre o tempo, duração, intervalo e a forma melódica do seu canto. O silêncio também está presente no dia-a-dia dos seres, que passam por um período de
hibernação, após deixar de ter contato com a luz por algumas horas e suas baterias se descarregarem. Entretanto, voltam à vida no dia seguinte assim que tenham acesso novamente a uma fonte de luz.

The installation “Campos Elíseos” deals with the relationship between human beings and nature. Its title refers to the place described in Greek Mythology as Paradise, where everyone there lives harmoniously. In this case, a utopia where all beings have equal power and voice, regardless of their origin, form or species. The work deals with human behavior in relation to nature as something predatory, destroying its sources and imposing the conquering dynamics that are particular to it. Here, the beautiful fields idealized by the Greeks are transformed into an arid land, where the only beings that managed to survive human action were artificial, autonomous ones, which depend only on light as a source of energy. It is a warning about the way we are treating the planet and what will happen in the coming years if we do not change our stance.

The beings proposed here are somewhere between the limits of nature, in a gap between the animal and plant kingdoms. The title of the installation refers to one of the rare animals that make up this bridge; a hybrid between fauna and flora – Elysia Chrolotica – which has both animal and plant characteristics. He is a being that can carry out photosynthesis and thus feed on light, while maintaining animal attributes, such as the emission of sounds.

The project began with the concepts of autonomy and artificial life. Autonomous beings are those that can control their inputs and outputs in dynamic and stable exchanges. This concept is part of studies in the area of Cybernetics carried out since the middle of the 20th century, by authors such as Norbert Wiener and Gilbert Simondon. Unlike automatons, which are closed to exchanges and according to these authors tend to disappear, autonomous beings dialogue with the outside and carry out constant exchanges with it, in order to adapt to the environment in which they are inserted.

Based on these concepts and a theme increasingly present in our society – artificial life – I thought about creating an installation made up of autonomous beings that used a type of clean energy, and communicated with each other through their own dialect, made up of sounds characteristic of each species. The energy that feeds these beings is light. However, instead of using solar panels, I decided to look for other ways of capturing light energy (from the sun or artificial sources) that would allow me to create aesthetically interesting beings, and not just have a functional nature of accumulating energy to power a circuit. The research began with searches on the internet about solar energy and alternative ways to capture it.

The sounds of beings were designed to have a relationship with their appearance, following concepts from modernist artists such as Kandinsky and Klee, who linked each shape to a specific type of sound. Pointed objects, for example, would have a harsher and noisier sound, while rounder objects would emit softer sounds. The forms of beings also have to do with
with the type of wave they emit: sinusoidal, triangular, sawtooth, etc. The singing of these beings is sporadic and happens at random times, according to the programming made for each individual. They have decision-making power over the time, duration, interval and melodic form of their singing. Silence is also present in the daily lives of beings, who go through a period of
hibernation, after no contact with light for a few hours and its batteries are discharged. However, they return to life the next day as soon as they have access to a light source again.

Protocolo é uma instalação audiovisual generativa criada pelos artistas Caio Fazolin e Henrique Roscoe, que simula uma micro sociedade da informação composta por onze indivíduos representados por televisores conectados a uma rede de microcomputadores. Nessa sociedade simulada, cada indivíduo aparenta ter uma autonomia de comunicação, conectando-se à internet em busca de notícias diárias. Mas o que rege o funcionamento das inter relações é um décimo segundo elemento, que nem tão exposto como os demais controla o tráfego de informação e consequentemente o comportamento do grupo. O algoritmo desenvolvido pela dupla de artistas cria uma situação paradoxal, onde, ao mesmo tempo que transparece que os indivíduos parecem agir de forma autônoma, são na verdade manipulados de forma discreta a cumprir padrões determinados pelo mestre.
